Born in 1892 in Mijni Novgorod, died in Vanves
in 1980.
In his constant search for spirituality, Léon Zack dreamt of reconciling
the three monotheisms. The oeuvre he produced became increasingly immaterial;
expressionist in the figurative period between the twenties and the forties,
abstract as early as 1947, geometry of space took form at the beginning
of the fifties. Between 1955 and 1960, the stellar clusters placed in
an infinite universe were expanded by matter, and from 1960 till his death,
light in all its force heralded the apotheosis, the culminating point
in his trajectory. In retrospect, his complete work could be seen as a
gradual progression toward that light.
A short time before his death, the MAM of Paris, the Musée Ingres in Montauban,
the Musée de Luxembourg, all gave retrospective exhibitions of his work.
He was deeply involved with the Russian post-Tsarist avant-garde movements,
but the works of that period, which he abandoned on leaving Russia, have
never been found. The Musée des Cordeliers in Paris paid homage to Léon
Zack with a retrospective exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary
of his birth.
